Tabletops & Mouthpieces

This was the 3 dimensional work that was exhibited in my Opening exhibition, Angela Flowers Gallery, 1973. I called all the free standing sculptures/constructions Tabletops. The majority comprised life casts of myself and others combined with other objects and presented in the format of a table. This seemed fitting as the theme of Opening was food and eroticism, the relationship of the feminine to food/nourishment. Among the themes was the table/the body as altar, as coffin. Blow Your Mind, including a cornucopia of drugs as an alternate form of nourishment. The series also featured erotically transformed wedding cakes, a theme which I also explored photographically (see Photo collage/Bride’s Cake series).

The Mouthpieces series comprised of life casts of my own mouth, cast in wax with a collage of other objects in and on them. I also made photographic collage Mouthpieces (see Photocollage/Mouthpieces). Whether rendered in 2 or 3 dimensions, I sought to bring the viewer outside their comfort zone with many of these pieces and let the mouth of woman speak viscerally of her pleasure and her pain.
