Arawak Paintings

Work details

I lived in the Caribbean from the early 1980s to 1994. In that period I dedicated myself to using my talent to contributing to the island culture. My partner (Nik Douglas) and I pioneered much archaeological investigation and through that, and living in this undeveloped region, I began to sense the people behind the artifacts we were discovering and researching.

I made a series of painting and pastels recreating my vision of the Arawak Indians who used to inhabit the islands. The body of the work was shown in 2 main exhibitions, Amerindians – Studies of a Lost People (1992) and  Arawak Renaissance – The Tribute Continues (1993).

I developed a style to express these beings in a manner I intended to be accessible to anyone who saw them, not just those familiar with the world of fine art. My intention was to make them as alive and vibrant as possible, while remaining true to my surrealist and collage roots in both the combination of materials included and the practice used in creating the compositions. I wanted to give a sense of both the outer and inner worlds of these people.
