Headboxes, Towers & Figurines

The body of this work was featured in my first solo exhibition, Angela Flowers Gallery, 1971. A number of the Headboxes were also exhibited in Young and Fantastic at ICA, 1969.

The works fell into two main categories, Headboxes featuring life casts of my face in combination with other objects. I wanted to use the idea of the ‘magic box’ to describe aspects of the self.  In Towers and Figurines, I put the bodies of dolls and casts of them through various transformations, using a variety of different materials. Many presented a symbiotic relationship to the natural world. My practice of taxidermy played a part in many of the pieces. Requiem for a Dead Falcon was made when my pet falcon died and I made this piece with his preserved body and all its parts to provide him with an Egyptian style effigy.
