50 % – The Visible Woman

As a student I wrote my thesis on the collage books of Max Ernst, Une Semaine de Bonte and La Femme 100 Tetes. I submitted my written thesis, along with a montage art film I made about the books and this series of my own photographic collages, presented as bound book, with photo prints of the collages and tissue overlays on which was printed the accompanying text to each image.

Having discovered the magic of surrealism, I wanted to employ its tools and methods to create a language for the feminine psyche to express itself. The kind of language that dove into the subconscious for images and wantonly combined them into situations and relationships that were both confrontational and expressive. Using my own image, my photos and ‘found images’, I made my first book of photo collage inspired by the collages of engravings in Max Ernst’s books.
