1960’s 3D Works

Work details

These works were done while I was at Farnham School of Art (1964-66) and Chelsea College of Art (1966-69). Several of the works from Chelsea were exhibited in Young and Fantastic at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, 1969.

I was interested in exploring new materials. The practices of Constructivism interested me and I sought to bring more organic and intuitive elements into the genre as in Dream Tower, based on a dream.

I made a 3 Dimensional ‘chess game’ with transparent and mirrored geometric forms to bring in the interactive element.

In Parallelogram Relief I translated the work I was doing in 2 dimensions (see Mirror Series) into a relief format, employing life casts, mirrors, etching plates and layer boxes inserted into the picture plane.

Bride in the Bath and Mummy Case were both part of my Diploma exhibit. Mummy Case had a life cast of my face and inverted breasts on its lid. Inside was an array of objects on two layers, including mummified body parts and a human spine.

Bride in the Bath was a lifecast I made of my model which I then wrapped in black satin and coated it in resin to give the appearance of wet cloth. I laid this on a sheet of clear plexiglass, cut to the shape of the bath, so it appeared as a water level.

The Armour was a mobile with lifecasts of parts of my body strung together with chains.

Caryatid was a sculpture I made to be a modern version of the female figure columns of ancient Rome. Life casts of my body were blended with the column. I only have photos of it as a work in progress.

While at Chelsea I began my series of Headboxes (then called Personal Boxes). These were plexiglass boxes, each containing a life cast of my face, objects and transparent layers with photos of my face.

Faces is a plexiglass hanging panel with silkscreen prints of my face on both sides. These are all images created for the Headbox series.
